Enjoying Toronto

Not know when I’d make my next venture up to Toronto I took advantage of the fact that work was pulling me up there again. I decided to catch an earlier flight on Sunday so that I could roam around, visit my favorite spots, take some photos and enjoy the city during hours I normally can’t (since I’m in the office). It was probably one of my more enjoyable work trips to date.

I started my Sunday adventure by visiting Beer Bistro. It was rather hot inside as the restaurant is on the first floor of an office building and on the weekends they don’t cool the building as much since no one is there working. I started things off with a tasty weizenbock followed by the excellent Lagunitas beverage pictured above. I guy sitting at the bar a few seats down from my order a $80 bottle of beer (Angel’s Share). I had two Kobe beef tacos and went on my way.

Next stop was to Bier Markt on the Esplanade (not pictured). I don’t particularly like this place but they do have about 100 beer witha focus on representing a wide variety of countries. Not to be a beer snob or anything, they don’t have too many that are all that interesting. They did have Konigshoven quad on tap which is pretty excellent but I headed right for the back of the menu in the “last call” section of bottles. I had an excellent gueze followed by something else Belgian that isn’t coming to mind at the moment. By far the highlight was the poutine I ordered. It is a most excellent Canadian dish that I probably described previously. In case I didn’t, take French fries (they claimed them to be frites but they most definitely were not) and cover them in gravy and cheese curds. Simply amazing!

I feel like I’ve posted a picture before similar to the one above. It is my favorite seat at “my favorite bar in the world.” Ok, maybe not my favorite seat but I’ve been there about 6-7 times and I really love the place. Pretty much all local Canadian draft beer, interesting food, a chill atmosphere and a style that I’d mimic if I ever owned a bar. I had a couple brews and watched Mythbusters.

Ever trip up here I make it a point to visit this bar. A couple nights each week they feature local musicians and if I lived in Toronto I’d definitely be a regular. Oh yeah, the bar is named C’est What? I believe that roughly translates into casual inquisitive greeting of “Hey what’s up.”

Back when I was working in Manchester I drank a lot of Stella Artois. It was the go-to beer for some reason. The British called it “the wife beater beer.” I believe this was due to the fact that it was a little stronger than your average British session ale. That isn’t really saying much because Stella is about 5% ABV. Anyway, it felt like an appropriate night cap.

I don’t have any pictures from the other two nights but they were definitely good memories. On Monday we went for dinner at a highly regarded steakhouse named Barberian. I had a decent filet that was probably the rarest I’ve ever gotten meat at a restaurant. I asked for medium and this was very much medium rare. It was wrapped in bacon and delicious so I didn’t complain. I also enjoyed baked potato service. They sent a person to the table with this little rotating metal carrier of toppings for the potato. They also provided some excellent garlic bread and pickled veggies (including celery and leeks). I’d recommend it if you are in the mood for steaks. I think TripAdvisor has it as the #5 restaurant in Toronto right now.

Tuesday night was even better. We headed north on Yonge Street (formly the longest street in the world) to Bar Volo. They were closed on Monday due to a Canadian holiday and moved their $5 imperial pint night to Tuesday. An imperial pint is 20 ounces. In a very expensive city like Toronto this was much appreciated. The food was great. I had a burger made of veal which might have been the best burger I’ve ever enjoyed. The most interesting part of the place revolves around the elusive beers of the trappist brewery Westvleteren. I was unable to sway our waitress to sell me any but it was cool to know that they potential had some in the storeroom. Maybe next time and I shall be back.

Snow Day

Normally, you would think that a snow day would be a great thing. To be honest, I would have rather been at work today. It was so hard to stay productive and on top of that I have the heat set pretty low during the daytime (didn’t feel like changing it). I may or may not have visited the local Irish pub for a lunch with coworkers. I also took a short walk to try and find interesting photographic subject matter. Taking pictures in the snow is tough. Finding interesting subject matter with good contrast takes a good eye and patience. Here are a few shots (there are a couple more on Facebook).

Farewell Computer

After nearly six and a half years my desktop computer has finally bitten the dust. It no longer boots. It no longer sends a signal to the video card. It no longer beeps. It does spin all the fans but that’s about all. It was working just fine on Sunday evening until I got the bright idea to attach an extra hard drive. Normally, that is not a big deal. For some unknown reason my motherboard didn’t like that very much. A very boring death. I would have at least enjoyed a puff of smoke.

The question is of course, what do I do next. The answer is complicated.

For starters, let’s talk about what I use my computer to do. I use it to surf the internet 3-6 hours per week. I occasionally edit photographs. Sometimes I play some very basic computer games. I write emails. I listen to music and burn CD’s. I don’t really use it a ton to be honest but to not have a normal, functional personal computer would not be acceptable. For the record, I do have a work laptop but I can’t really use that to download music (that I already own of course) or to edit photos or to store things long term. I also have an old computer in the basement that I use solely for playing mp3′s. It is too old and slow to do much more than that.

I think it is fair to say that I do need to replace the computer. For the sake of seeing a big picture let’s assume I can get all of my relevant data stored on external storage so that I transfer what is needed but essentially start fresh. So, what are my options?

1) Custom system – good specs but not a dream system – motherboard, CPU, memory, case, DVD drive = ~$500

2) Custom system – top of the line – mostly the same parts, a better CPU plus a new video card = ~$800

3) iMac – base system = $1200

4) MacBook – base system = $1000

5) A friend’s old extra computer – nearly the same specs as my dead computer = $50

6) Refurbished HP desktop – modern hardware but no where near top-of-the-line = ~$350

I could leave it at that, but that really wouldn’t paint the picture fairly. You might think this is a conflict of wants versus needs and the $50 computer would do the trick. While that is a great short-term solution, how will it go in the long-term? The other options are better long-term investments and will ensure that I have a system that can aptly handle any new technologies. The Macs can be setup to dual-boot which means I not only would have the features of the Mac but also a Windows based system. The decision is pretty tough.

Any recommendations?

Christmas Preparation

Wednesday night was spent decking the halls. My usual tree purchase location was closed likely do to the rain so I had to drive up Ridge Ave to find a tree. I went with a 5 1/2′ fraser fir for $32 from some grumpy guy. This year I decided to prop it up on a table so that it wouldn’t be so hidden in the corner. With Erin’s help we got it looking really nice and trimmed the house with the usuals of lighted garland around the railing and wreath on the front door. Please take notice to the infamous A as the tree topper. A shout out to the CinC indeed.

Everyone is invited to come over for hot chocolate, or some whiskey, or some homebrew, or some egg-nog or whatever you want to drink.

Adult Furniture

While I decided to not buy a whole bunch of new furniture, I did decide to tie what I had together with a new coffee/cocktail table. One of my buddies from work helped me move the big couch up from the basement and while the room looked much better, the empty space in the middle of the room just wasn’t working.

I looked at a variety of stores looking for something nice for the right price. I looked at Pier1, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Raymore & Flanigan and Target. I’d say that Target surprised me the most as they had a lot of relatively inexpensive options that looked pretty nice but were only available online. I wanted fairly instant gratification so I couldn’t wait. I went to an R&F showroom right down the road from my office and browsed around. I found my first piece of “adult” furniture and it really ties the room together.

Meet The Parents

This past weekend was a relationship right of passage. Erin’s parents were in town and I was going to meet them for the first time.

The timing of my return to Philly on Thursday was perfect. It wasn’t too late so I stopped by her house to say hello and catch up. Towards the end of my stay the timing lined up nicely. Erin’s parents arrived from Westborough, MA. I helped them carry some supplies into the house and had a short though pleasant introduction.

On Friday I met up with her parents and brother to go out for dinner. We hit up Midtown Continental which is a fun martini/tapas Steven Starr restaurant in Center City. I’d been there a few times before and always enjoyed it. We had a variety of enjoyable dishes. Tapas much like sushi is interesting in that you end up eating very slowly which gives your stomach a chance to truly tell you when you’ve had enough to eat. After dinner we went back to Erin’s house to chat. I was very pleased by the fact that I felt quite relaxed as I listened to stories and told little bits about myself. I honestly could have sat there for a few more hours (though eventually Erin and I went down to Bishop’s Collar for some delicious beers).

On Saturday I made another short visit to spend some quality time. My task was to bring over a drill so that her dad could fix a curtain rod. Of course I screwed this up by failing to bring drill bits. It hadn’t really occurred to me that this was necessary as I often just use the drill to screw screws into place without a pilot hole. Sometimes I do follow construction rules. Anyway, I wasn’t able to stay for dinner but I got to look at some nice pictures from a trip her parents took to Colorado.

Overall, I think the meeting went really well. I honestly enjoyed being around them. I think there were two reasons for this. The first was that they were just easy going, interesting folks with approachable personalities. The second is that by being around them the greater the chance that I’d learn some more about Erin. I wanted to hear some good stories though they were pretty gentle possibly because it was the first meeting. I look forward to the next visit and also look forward to taking a trip with Erin up to Westborough sometime.

It’ll Pass

This past weekend was filled with a great deal of activity. I’d say that I equally enjoy weekends doing not much of anything and doing a lot but given the fact that it is nice outside and summer and all it makes sense to take advantage of it all. I must give much props to Erin because she got to spend about 14 minutes at home between Friday morning and Sunday evening.

Friday night was spent down at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington to see Wilco and Conor Oberst opening for them. The last time they were in town I missed out on tickets so this time I bought 4 with the hopes of making a few bucks. I ended up getting $20 for the tickets from some random guy in what I thought was a last hope effort as we walked to the stadium. As we rounded the bend we saw a line of a hundred plus people waiting to buy tickets. I could have totally made my money back if I had been patient.

My ineffective sales tactics quickly faded as we listened to a rather loud Mystic Valley Band with 24 ounce Bud Lights, hot dogs and fries. The weather was wonderful and the concert layout of the staging being in mid-center field was interesting though quite functional. Wilco put on a great show and played songs from almost every one of their 8 albums. They didn’t go heavy on the new disc at all and they even played my favorite song “Misunderstood.” With 2 encores the show pushed well over 2 hours. It was a lot of fun.

On Saturday we headed up to central PA. After a quick stop at Weis Markets for camping snacks it was on to Kreamer. I don’t want to overplay the significance of “meeting the parents” but it is a important step in a relationship. We stopped at my parent’s house briefly and I think things went really well. That is a weird statement to make actually as I couldn’t really picture things going badly. We then headed over to Adam’s house to meet up for camping.

After a few quick stops to Cole’s Hardware, the beer store and Sheetz it was time to head up to the mountains. I believe we’ve been heading up to our spot for 7 years now and it has always been a good time. I can’t divulge too many details about our choice of location but I can say that the remote quality of it really makes it. Well, cellphones work there which goes to show that it is really hard to truly be remote any more.

I did get questioned on how we would handle the predicted thunderstorms. I said we’d figure it out / use my giant tent as shelter. I’m not going to try and describe what ensued. It rained a lot, the tent didn’t really work out for various reasons (e.g. putting the rain fly on backwards). However, I had fortunately planned ahead and had a large blue tarp which we strung between our two vehicles for shelter. We got very wet nonetheless but we drank beers, told stories and laughed a great deal. I can’t tell you how many times one of us exclaimed “it’ll pass.” It was the phrase that defined the trip. And it did pass and night was good. The joke of the morning as we headed out was how many days it would be before Erin dumped me because of what I had just put her through. She got an undiluted adventure/experience.

On Sunday I was so tired and ended up sleeping on my parent’s couch for a while. We did some more meet the parents time and had a really nice lunch that included fresh lettuce from my mom’s garden. I was quite pleased with the situation, conversation and everything frankly. I was reminded how lucky I am to have good parents.

As busy as the weekend was and as physically tired I felt, from a mental perspective I felt quite well. I can’t complain.

2009 Beach Blast Soccer Tournament

This past weekend I went down to Wildwood, NJ to take part in the 2009 Beach Blast soccer tournament. This was my first trip ever to the Jersey shore. It was definitely an experience that text won’t do justice. It really was a blast. The weather was amazing. The people were fun. The soccer was exciting. The ocean was fun. Camping on the beach was cool even though you got sand in everything. Even if I didn’t get invited back next year, I’d seriously consider putting together a team as the experience was great.

I suppose I should explain what the whole deal was. So, the coed team I’m on split into a male and female team (along with a few additional folks). The format was a fairly short field with smaller goals and 4 field players plus a keeper. We played 3 games to try and qualify for the finals. I believe our scores were 8-3, 6-4 and 6-3. We made it into the finals but unfortunately lost 4-3 in a great match-up against some guys that supposedly went to Drexel. We definitely had a talented squad and I did my part (plenty of ESPN highlights). Being on sand was challenging though it made being a keeper even more fun as I could dive to my hearts content with little pain. The ladies team won their division for the 3rd straight year.

I’m not too disappointed that my parents never took me to the beach/shore as a child as it is crazy place.
